Holiday Wishes and a New Year’s Reminder

Posted on 06 December 2010 by admin (0)

Hello everyone! This fall has gone very quickly and it’s hard to believe it but the holidays have already begun. I hope you have had a great year and are enjoying the seasonal festivities with family and friends!

Believe it or not, it is time to start thinking about the upcoming tax season. Personally, I am going to try to sneak in a few extra rounds of golf this month because my busiest work season starts in January. As usual, from January through April I will be in my office early and will stay late so that I can accommodate your work and personal schedules. I encourage you to call my office soon (212-308-5495) to make an appointment so you have the best choice of appointments. If you have any questions about what you need to bring to your appointment, just give me a call or send me an email. Also, if you need assistance creating or amending wills or trust documents, you will want to book an appointment with my colleague Ron Meyers. Ron, as you may recall, is an estate attorney who joined my office last year. A little bit of high-quality one stop shopping right here in midtown.

So, the elections are over (don’t you miss the political commercials?) and we are officially in the lame duck Congress waiting to see what will finally come to pass regarding the anticipated “sunset” of certain portions of the tax reform legislation that was passed in 2001 under former President George W. Bush. Just as a reminder, this won’t affect the tax rates applicable to the 2010 tax year, though it might affect the way I recommend we handle your 2010 tax filing. For more information on this take a look at my earlier blog on this subject.

The question is, will Congress just let all of the benefits of the Bush tax reforms sunset, or will there be some carve outs? The latest discussion is the possibility that people with taxable income under $1 million may be exempted from the sunset. As soon as Congress does make a decision (or a decision is made as a result of their inaction), I will post a blog with details, so check back over the next few weeks.

Remember, go ahead and book your tax preparation appointment now and then forget about it while you enjoy the holiday season to its fullest. I am looking forward to seeing you and speaking with you soon!
