First, A Heartfelt Thank You to My Clients and Friends

One of my absolute favorite things about the work I do is the opportunity it has given me to develop close relationships with my clients. Over the years I have come to think of you all as friends. You have enriched my life beyond my wildest expectations – you have inspired me to work harder, made me think about financial issues from a million different angles, and by the sheer fact of your diversity you have educated me about the extraordinary array of professions and talents that exist in the world.

For some time now I have been looking for a really meaningful way to thank you for all that you have given to me and a way to give something back to you. This blog is where I am starting – through it I will be able to stay in touch with you more frequently and share information that I think will be helpful. Of course, nothing can or will replace our personal conversations by phone or in my office – these conversations make my day every day!

So, thank you again for being my clients and my friends and thank you for inspiring me to launch this blog!

A Little Background for Newcomers

For those of you who somehow landed here via a link from a friend, let me tell you just a little bit about who I am. My name is Scott Gutterson and I have been a tax attorney for many, many years – decades in fact. I prepare people’s tax returns and help them with anything involving the law and money. I give practical advice in the straightforward manner of a wise parent or trusted uncle. I’m here to help you get where you want to go financially, I’m not here to make you feel bad because you aren’t there already. You can get where you want to go – it doesn’t require a degree in finance and it doesn’t require that you already have a massive paycheck. It just takes a little time and some smart habits.

And, What is This Blog All About?

In short, this blog is here to make issues around money, saving, and investing less complicated and more fun. Unless you are one of the very, very few people who have so much money that you never have to think about it, you probably have woken up in the middle of some dark night worrying about it. Wondering how you can buy a house (or if you should buy one), how you will be able to start your own business, or save enough money for a rainy day or for your retirement. It can all seem overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. This blog is about uncomplicating money, giving practical, tactical, easy to follow advice that will make you feel less worried and more secure.

Below are some of the topics you can look forward to reading about in the coming weeks and months. I welcome everyone’s comments, questions, and suggestions for topics.

This is a great idea, Scott. Question: If the tax rates revert to what they were before the Bush tax cuts, what will they be?

  6. Paul Guayante says:

    Great idea.
Congratulations and best of luck with this new site.
I have always felt that I could get a hold of you anytime, but this just makes it even easier.

    Hi Peg,

So, right now the maximum tax rate is 35% and there are not any serious discussions about repealing the Bush tax cuts. However, if they were to be repealed, you could expect to see the 15% rate on dividend income eliminated, and the 15% cap on long-term capital gains to be increased.

Hope this helps. As always – and this applies to anyone reading – if you have a specific question about your particular financial situation, please contact me or another qualified advisor to get appropriate advice before you take any action.
